Diagram 18: The doubled pawns are good for White.

In Diagram 19, Black’s position is littered with doubled pawns, but here they serve Black well because Black has used both the open files the doubled pawns have yielded (the d-file and the g-file) to attack White’s position. In particular, the open g-file is contributing to White’s king coming under heavy fire, and even if it’s White’s turn to move, I doubt White can survive. (Black threatens 1…Nf4, after which a catastrophe will occur on d3, g2, and h3.) Notice here that the doubled pawns are all controlling important squares: d4, e5, and e6. In this case, the doubled pawns are good for Black because the piece activity they generate far outweighs the structural weakness they constitute.
